Shooting video with a stills camera

Over the years I have often been asked if I ever shoot video in addition to stills, I have never been able to justify the additional expense of yet another camera system and a continuous lighting kit so have had to turn the work down. My degree was in Film, Video and Photographic Art so I know a little about the other media. I have also noticed that my recent new cameras have had a button that says ‘Video’ so feel that while I could never claim to be a filmmaker I might be able to offer clients video clips to accompany the stills I normally supply.
To properly take advantage of the video features I have had to modify my nice ergonomically designed camera into an alien beast with extra holders, microphones and focussy things. The footage that the camera takes though is beautiful, the shallow depth of field produced gives a polished high quality look which works particularly well with food work.

You can see examples of some of my short films in the video section.

Filming Food – Sgroppino

I have taken quite a few photographs for Marshfield Ice Cream but they recently asked me if I would like to have a go at doing some filming for them. Until a month or so ago I hadn’t realised my stills camera could shoot video so I have had a lot to learn. I still have a lot to learn but this is my first attempt.
